Description

The Church of St John is a church located in Southport, built in 1890 and enlarged between 1903 and 1909 by the architectural firm Paley and Austin. It is constructed of common brick in English garden wall bond, featuring dressings of glazed red brick, red terracotta, and some timber-framing. The bellcote-spire is clad with green slates. The architectural style is Arts-and-Crafts with Perpendicular details.

The church has a nave with north and south aisles that include double north and south transepts, a chancel with a parallel south chapel, and a north vestry. The exterior of the south side features a timber-framed gabled porch at the first bay of the aisle, accompanied by a square three-light window to the right. The large coupled transepts each have a central buttress with offsets, flanked by tall three-stage two-light windows that have Tudor-arched lights, traceried heads, and hoodmoulds. The exposed left side of the west transept and the apexes of both gables showcase timber studwork.

At the east end, the chapel has a square three-light window. The west end of the nave is marked by prominent buttresses with offsets and a wide segmental-headed six-light west window, featuring a chamfered brick surround, terracotta mullions, and Perpendicular tracery in the head. The roof is topped with a slated bellcote that has wooden traceried two-light windows and a broached spire with a slender metal finial. The chancel contains a large two-centred arched east window with a configuration of one, three, and one lights, designed in a style similar to the west window.

Inside, the church features exposed brick and has four-bay arcades with two-centred arches supported by chamfered columns without capitals.
