Description
The Ball monument, located approximately 10 meters south of the chancel of the Church of St Cuthbert in Southport, is a headstone dating from the 1690s. It commemorates Jane, the wife of John Ball of Banks, who died on June 22, 1692. The monument is made of sandstone and features a plain square slab with an inscription in large Roman capitals that reads: "HERE LYE THE / BODY OF IANE / THE WIFE OF / JOHN BALL DE / BANCKS SEPUL. / IUNE THE 29 / 1692." The letters are somewhat crudely formed, with the "N" in "Bancks" appearing reversed. This monument is part of a group that includes the Church of St Cuthbert, the Meadow monument, and the Sutton monument.
