Description

Arden College, formerly known as the Primitive Methodist Sunday School, is a building from 1890 located on Derby Road in Southport. Designed by FW Dixon, it features Accrington brick with sandstone dressings and slate roofs, showcasing an eclectic architectural style. The building has a large rectangular plan and stands two storeys tall with a nine-window range arranged in a symmetrical pattern of 2:1:3:1:2.

The prominent central gable is connected to gabled wings by narrow single-window bays topped with balustraded parapets. The ground floor of the central section includes gableted stone pilaster-buttresses and large doorways in the outer bays, each with overlights. The centre features a pair of windows with mullioned top lights, beneath which is a foundation stone laid by WP Hartley Esq. in 1890. The upper floor has a large round-headed window with a keyed architrave and wooden mullions and transoms, creating three tiers of patterned stained glass lights, along with rectangular windows in the outer bays that have mullioned top lights and raised brick surrounds with segmental-pedimented panels above. A wide stone plaque in the gable reads: "PRIMITIVE METHODIST SUNDAY SCHOOL 1890."

The gabled wings each have two narrow pilastered bays and shaped gables, featuring ground floor windows similar to those in the centre and round-headed windows on the first floor. The sides and rear of the building are simpler in design. The interior has been reported as remodelled. Arden College forms a group with the nearby Methodist Church of St Mark to the north.
