Description
Normanhurst is a villa, built in 1889 and altered in 1893 by G.S. Packer. It has since been converted into five flats. The building is constructed of red brick in stretcher bond, with yellow brick dressings, buff terracotta, and sandstone. It has a slate roof and an eclectic style incorporating Moorish details. The plan is rectangular and double-fronted.
The exterior is two storeys over a basement, with three bays. It is symmetrical, featuring narrow gabled bays flanking a wide recessed centre. At ground floor, the recessed centre is bridged by a single wide semicircular brick arch. Above this, a balustraded balcony has two round-headed yellow brick arches with enriched spandrels, crossed by a red brick Lombard frieze supporting a yellow brick and balustraded parapet. A doorway, recessed to the left, is accessed by lateral steps to the right, protected by cast-iron railings, leading to a raised terrace with an enriched front wall and terminal piers topped with urns. A large semicircular window with arched and radiating glazing bars, and stained glass, is behind the balcony. The outer bays each have 12/1 sash windows on both floors, all with chamfered stone surrounds. There is a Lombard frieze above the ground floor windows, and each gable is in a Moorish style featuring an arcaded band, tourelles with mosaic panels, a two-tier upstand with a semicircular pediment, and small ball finials. The side walls are unadorned.
The interior of the building was not inspected during the listing process. The property includes a front terrace and railings.
