Description

Lord Street West United Church is a former Congregational church, now a United Reformed church, built between 1861 and 1862. It was designed by Walker of Manchester and was gutted by fire in 1964, after which it was restored. The church is constructed of coursed sandstone rubble and features a slate roof with fishscale bands of green slate, showcasing a Decorated Gothic Revival style.

The church has a nave with a north-west tower, which no longer has its spire, a south aisle, a south-west vestry, and a chancel. The exterior includes a six-bay nave with buttresses, a plinth, and an ashlar parapet with ridged coping. It features two-centred arched three-light windows with varying tracery and hoodmoulds that have figured stops. At the west end, there is a two-centred arched west doorway with a moulded surround and a hoodmould with figured stops, alongside a large segmental-pointed five-light window with Decorated tracery.

The tower has short angle buttresses, a two-centred arched west doorway similar to that of the nave, cusped lancets on the second stage, and two-centred arched two-light belfry windows with moulded surrounds, shafts, and stone louvres, culminating in the broached base of the former spire. Additionally, there is a church hall attached to the south-east end, built in 1965 by David Jones of Ormerod & Partners of Liverpool. The interior has not been inspected.
