Description

The property at 15 Shore Road, Skelmorlie, is a predominantly 1860 villa, with an earlier 20th-century addition to the south side. It was converted into flats in 1966 by Thomas Smith, Gibb and Pate. The house is a two-storey, L-shaped building with multiple gables, deep eaves, decorative bargeboards, a prominent advanced bay window to the west, lower wings to the sides and rear, and distinctive barley-twist chimney cans.

The villa is constructed from squared, snecked, and stugged red sandstone with ashlar dressings, and incorporates a base course to the front. Window margins are chamfered, with sloping sills; the principal elevations feature shouldered window surrounds, and stone mullions divide the bipartite and tripartite windows.

The west (principal) elevation has four bays. Gabled bays flank the building with tripartite windows on the ground floor and bipartite windows above. A large, three-window canted bay is centrally positioned to the right, featuring a steep, piended roof and gabled dormerheads above the first-floor windows. A narrower bay to the left incorporates a gabled dormer at the first floor. A 20th-century sun lounge extends from the outer right.

The north (entrance) elevation has five bays, with a two-bay entrance gable on the right. It features a timber panelled front door within a roll-moulded architrave, incorporating a rectangular fanlight above the lintel and sidelights, with a small window above the door. A four-light canted bay window projects forward to the right, with a gabled bipartite window above. A recessed bay is centrally positioned, with a 20th-century half-glazed door at ground level and a gabled dormer above. A lower, gabled bay projects to the left, with a tripartite window on the ground floor, and a single-storey gabled bay extends to the outer left.

The rear (east) elevation is multi-gabled and irregularly fenestrated, with a two-sided courtyard to the left. Two 20th-century glazed back doors are present. A tripartite staircase window overlooks the courtyard, and bears a circular stained glass window depicting an armorial bearing above.

The south (side) elevation has two gabled dormers to the first floor. A sun lounge is advanced at ground level to the left, and a lean-to brick addition is present at ground level to the right.

The majority of the windows are timber sash and case with plate glass; some rear windows retain four-pane glazing. Non-traditional uPVC windows are found on the former service wing. Coped sandstone stacks support tall barley-twist cream clay chimney cans with crenellated tops. The roof is covered with graded grey slate and metal flashings, with cast-iron rainwater goods.

The interior has been divided into three flats. The ground floor flat includes a drawing room with a decorative cornice, frieze, and ceiling rose; other areas have plainer cornicing, and timber panelled doors are present. The upstairs flat features a staircase with decorative cast-iron balusters and a mahogany handrail. Access was not gained to the remainder of the interior.

The property is enclosed by a coped, red sandstone boundary wall.
