Description
The Skelmorlie Measured Mile Marker consists of two pairs of tall poles erected in 1866 by the shipbuilding firm of Robert Napier & Sons. The poles were surveyed by Kyle and Frew, and Smith and Wharrie, land surveyors, and checked by Admiralty staff. They are set 1 nautical mile apart on concrete bases and secured with iron stays, featuring sights at the upper level. Originally established for the testing and trials of ships, these poles may not be the originals. Further information can be found in J Napier’s biography of Robert Napier (1904) and in the Kyle & Frew workbooks held in Strathclyde Regional Archives.
