Description

Wilmar is a detached house built between 1907 and 1908 by the architectural practice Honeyman, Keppie and Mackintosh. Around 1978, it was converted into three separate flats. The house is a two-storey, U-plan villa with projecting gables to the outer bays of the front elevation, a central verandah/porch, and a former single-storey and attic service wing at the rear. It has deep eaves and bargeboarded gables. The exterior is constructed of squared, snecked, and stugged red sandstone with ashlar dressings, and features moulded string courses to the bay windows. The fenestration is irregular, with plain window margins.

The west (principal) elevation has a slightly off-centre, round-arched, half-glazed timber panelled front door set within a roll-moulded architrave with alternating raised voussoirs. The flanking bays contain irregular fenestration, including a triple hall window with leaded lights to the right of the door. A raised timber verandah, supported on a stone base and featuring a simple balustrade and red tile floor, extends from the front. An advanced, coped gable to the right includes a two-storey, five-light canted bay window. To the left, another advanced bargeboarded gable incorporates a rectangular bay window at ground level.

The east (rear) elevation provides access to an open courtyard and has irregular fenestration. An advanced gable is present to the left. A recessed two-bay central section is notable for its catslide roof over a three-light leaded staircase window. A long service wing projects on the right side, with some Velux windows and a box dormer to the attic space. The north and south (side) elevations are also irregularly fenestrated, with a half-glazed timber panelled door on the south elevation.

The windows are predominantly timber sash and case, with six-pane glazing in the upper sashes and plate glass in the lower ones; some non-traditional uPVC windows are also present. Coped sandstone stacks are topped with red clay cans. The roof is covered in graded grey slate.

The interior of Flat 1, inspected in 2005, features timber panelling in the entrance hall, small carved panels above doorways, a red brick fireplace with a semicircular brick fender and an advanced panelled overmantle with decorative carving. Carved initials, “MR” and “WCR,” are visible on the window mullions. A late-20th century staircase is also present. The former billiard room has a roll-moulded marble chimneypiece with a Doric-pilastered timber overmantle and marble fender, alongside a timber picture rail and plain plaster cornice. The drawing room has a Tudor-arched roll-moulded stone chimneypiece with carved spandrels and a compartmented ceiling. Built-in timber cupboards have been incorporated into the bedroom. Timber panelled doors are a consistent feature throughout, accompanied by bronze latches and unusual roll-moulded doorframes.

The property is enclosed by a coped red sandstone boundary wall with cylindrical gatepiers topped with flat caps. Sandstone garden steps lead north of the house.
