Description
A terrace of houses, now flats, was built in 1843 by Wyatt Papworth. The building is constructed of stucco with a slate hipped roof. It rises four storeys with a basement and a later attic, and comprises 37 bays, featuring five three-bay projecting blocks centrally, at each end, and between these. There are five bays between each projecting block. The ground floor has channelled rustication and a cornice, along with sill courses and a top modillioned cornice. The central block has a panelled frieze below the second-floor windows, a frieze with a Vitruvian scroll below the third-floor windows, a top consoled frieze, and rusticated quoins. Windows above the ground floor have architraves; those to the second floor have gable panels over. Most windows are sash windows with glazing bars. The central entrance is accessed via a Doric porch with a balustrade above. Other entrances have round heads with archivolts. The central and end projecting blocks are flanked by extruded entrance bays of two or three storeys, each with balustrades over the ground floors. Stone piers and iron panels define the areas, except for the end blocks. First-floor iron verandahs are located at the rear of the building. Three iron lamp standards with lamps are situated at the front of the house, and contribute to the group value.
