Description
The Midland Hotel is a public house built in the mid-19th century, featuring a stucco exterior and a slate roof in a restrained Italianate style. The building stands four storeys tall, with one bay facing Ranelagh Street, a slightly inset curved corner with three bays, and two bays on Cases Street. The ground floor showcases an Art Nouveau pub front from around 1900, complete with marble pilasters and plinth, bowed windows with engraved glass, decorated brass plaques, and enriched cresting. The panelled doors are flanked by decorated brass panels and topped with coloured glass fanlights, along with a wrought iron hotel sign and a fascia board with brackets.
The first and second floors are articulated by a pilastrade featuring flat pilasters, a sill band on the second floor, and a top cornice with a blocking course. The first-floor windows are adorned with architraves, friezes, and consoled cornices, while the corner windows have enriched architraves and friezes. The second-floor corner windows feature eared architraves. All upper-floor windows are sashed with glazing bars. Inside, the hotel includes panelling, engraved mirrors, scagliola columns, and enriched plasterwork.
