Description
The ABC Cinema, formerly known as the Forum Cinema, is a cinema building constructed around 1930 by architect A. E. Shennan. It is located on a rounded corner with Elliot Street and is faced in Portland stone, standing three stories tall. The facade features vertical metal windows arranged in groups of two and three, both horizontally and vertically, set within panels. The main window group above the entrance on the corner includes pilaster motifs and is topped with a panel displaying echelon motifs at the upper corners. There is a plinth for a flagstaff that interrupts the otherwise continuous parapet. The entrance was remodeled in mosaic around 1970, resulting in the loss of the original canopy.
Inside, the auditorium has splayed sides and a gallery with a concave front. The square proscenium arch is framed by another arch that features large vertical flutes and a geometric floral band around the inner arch. Each side of the auditorium contains very tall niches with fountain motifs on the interior cupolas. The main flat ceiling has a geometric rosette at its center, and the wall panelling includes quasi-pilasters. There is also a rear recess with an oval saucer dome. The interior of the cinema is listed for its architectural significance.
