Description
The Adelphi Hotel is a building constructed in 1912 by Frank Atkinson. It is made of Portland stone and stands seven storeys tall with eleven bays. The main entrance features columns in antis over the central three bays of the semi-basement. The first floor is highlighted by round-arched windows with mask keystones and a moulded cornice, while the other windows are rectangular. The fourth and fifth floors are treated together, showcasing giant Ionic columns in the center in front of three recessed bays, with giant columns also flanking the end bays. At the top, there is a cornice and balustrade, with a seventh floor above. The wings extend to the rear at an obtuse angle, forming a truncated wedge plan, although the fourth side was never completed. The interior boasts columns, marble panelling, Greek details, and coffered arches in a remarkable series of public rooms, along with original fittings in the bedrooms.
