Description

The Methodist Central Hall, located at 35 to 43 Renshaw Street and including 2 to 6 Upper Newington, is a chapel, shops, and offices built between 1904 and 1905 by architects Bradshaw and Gass. The building features red brick and yellow terracotta with a slate roof.

It stands three storeys high with an attic and consists of ten bays, including a canted corner bay and a six-bay return. The ground floor has segmental arched openings adorned with Art Nouveau capitals and a cornice above the shop front. The second, third, eighth, and ninth bays project outward, with two being canted and two bowed, all featuring terracotta facings. The windows are primarily mullioned, some with transoms and small-paned casements, while the second-floor windows are mostly segmental headed, except for those in the projecting bays. Terracotta foliage decorates the centre and flanking segmental bays. The top cornice features lunettes behind an Ionic colonnade, with a short spire above the second and ninth bays. The end bay has three windows topped by a shallow dome on a drum with canted angles. The third and eighth bays have small domes, and there are two flat-topped dormers in between. Tall brick stacks are present, and the corner is accentuated with polygonal turrets topped with cupolas, flanking a two-storey oriel with mullioned and transomed windows above a large lunette. The gable and dormer are also flanked by turrets.

Inside, the main hall features a coffered saucer dome, and a horseshoe gallery supported by columns has an arcade with fan spandrels. There is an organ recess with a segmental arch, and the interior showcases elaborate pilaster work with Art Nouveau details.
