Description

No 38 Castle Street and No 1 Brunswick Street is a former bank building, originally the Adelphi Bank, designed by Caröe in 1892. It is constructed of red and yellow sandstone on a polished red granite base and stands four storeys tall with an attic. The building features two bays facing Castle Street, a corner turret, and four bays along Brunswick Street.

The chamfered corner includes a round-arched entrance with bronze doors that have reliefs created by Stirling Lee, supported by barley sugar columns. The reliefs depict pairs of Famous Friends, including David and Jonathan, Achilles and Patroclus, Castor and Pollux, and Roland and Oliver. There are two round-arched windows on Castle Street and four windows along Brunswick Street, accompanied by another doorway, pilasters, and a pediment. The corner turret rises to a green copper onion dome. The cross windows are separated by attached fluted columns, with those on the second floor featuring statues in niches. The steep roof has dormers topped with swept copper roofs and button finials. The end bay on Brunswick Street has a shaped gable with an obelisk finial, and there are two scrolled and moulded stacks.

Inside, there are plaster panels in relief and a staircase with a coffered ceiling. This building is noted as one of the most distinctive commercial structures in the city, showcasing an impressive array of decorative details.
