Description

This building comprises the offices at 48 and 50 Castle Street. It was constructed in 1864, designed by Picton, and is built of ashlar. The building is three storeys high with a basement, and four bays wide. The basement and ground floor have granite Doric columns on pedestals, with arches between them. Steps ascend to the side doorways, while steps descend to the basement office. A cornice sits above the ground floor. The first floor features round arches with a hollow chamfer, cable mouldings, relief busts in the tympana, Corinthian pilasters, and rectangular casements, all fitted with large-paned modern glazing. The top floor has four windows in rectangular architraves with shoulders and pediments. A deep, consoled frieze sits above a cornice, with gable stacks rising from the roof.
