Description
No. 36 Castle Street is a bank building dating from the 1890s, designed by Grayson and Ould. It is constructed of stone on a polished red granite base and stands four storeys tall with attics. The building features four bays facing Castle Street and five bays on Brunswick Street. It is a corner building with a rounded angle turret topped by a small dome. The windows are moulded, with stone mullions and transoms; the ground and second floors have cross windows, while the first floor has six-light windows, and the third floor features colonnettes that separate the lights. An enriched cornice runs above the ground floor, and superimposed fluted pilasters separate the bays. The building has a dentilled cornice, a balustraded parapet, and three dormers with segmental pediments on the Castle Street side. The Brunswick Street facade includes another sunken turret, which, along with the angle turret, flanks a large decorated gable.
