Description

This is a terrace of six houses, originally designed as a symmetrical group, built around 1835. The houses are constructed of stucco with a slate roof. They are two storeys high with an attic storey to numbers 37 to 39, and a smaller attic to number 40, and include a basement level. Each house has two bays, and the end bays return to buildings on Canning Street and Huskisson Street. The building features a top cornice and blocking course. Each house originally had a canted bay. Numbers 38 and 39 have two-storey canted bays with cornices and balustrades. The entrances are framed by Doric porches, and the windows above are accompanied by balustraded balconies. Number 38 has iron balconies to the first-floor bay windows. Numbers 37 and 40 feature two-storey canted bays where the first floor has balustraded balconies, panelled pilasters, an entablature, and a gable to the front. The front windows are tripartite, while the side windows are architraved. The entrances to numbers 37 and 40 are framed by Tuscan porches. Number 37 has a later-added attic storey with balustrading to the window sills, and number 40 has a balustraded balcony over the doorway. Number 78 Canning Street has a canted ground floor bay with a balustraded parapet, two balustraded balconies, and a return with a Tuscan porch and varied window placement. Number 53 Huskisson Street is similar to number 78 Canning Street, but with an Ionic porch. Iron railings define the front gardens, and the steps have decorative heads. Numbers 37 and 38 have iron gate piers.
