Description
The lodge and gateway to Bishop Eton Monastery were built in the 1840s and designed by Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin. Constructed from stone with a slate roof featuring hexagonal slates, the building is single-storey and has a T-shaped plan. The gable facing the road includes a three-light window with lattice glazing, although the lower parts have been boarded since 1984. Above this window is a round section with a quatrefoil design. To the right, there is a niche with a bowl set into the wall. The left side features another three-light window and a dormer with a segmental head and gabled roof. At the rear, there is a gable with an end stack on the right and a two-light window on the left. The gateway is marked by a segmental-pointed archway, flanked by weathered and gabled buttresses. Above the archway, there is a niche containing a statue of Bishop Eton, with mitred shields on either side inscribed with "B" and "S". To the right of the archway, there is a pointed arch with a studded door. The weathered coping above the niche is raised and features a cross.
