Description
The Church of St John the Evangelist is a Catholic church built in 1885 by architects J. and B. Sinnott. It features rock-faced stone with ashlar bands and dressings, topped with a slate roof. The church consists of a single vessel nave and chancel, with aisles beneath lean-to roofs, transepts, and chapels; a northern chapel was added around 1920. The nave includes a five-light west window with Geometrical tracery above a canted baptistry that has a canted projecting centre. The aisle windows are three-light, while the clerestory windows are two-light, separated by flat buttresses between pairs of windows. The southwest porch has a pointed entrance and a stepped gable. The low south transept features a five-light window, and the taller north transept includes an organ loft. The east end showcases a seven-light window, with flanking chapels under lean-to roofs that have rose windows. Inside, there is a four-bay nave arcade supported by round columns, a waggon roof, and a west gallery. The chancel has a two-bay arcade with clustered columns and a wrought-iron reredos.
