Description

The Church of St John the Baptist is a church built between 1878 and 1879 by architects Wild and Collins. It features rock-faced stone with ashlar dressings and a slate roof. The structure includes a nave and chancel under one roof, a south aisle, a south-west tower, a south vestry, and a north porch. The nave has six bays and the chancel has two bays, separated on the north side by a taller buttress. The windows in the nave and aisle are two-light with geometrical tracery, positioned between weathered buttresses. There is a cusped circular clerestory window and a five-light east window with geometrical tracery. The vestry has twin gables and the tower is three-stage, featuring an east door, angled weathered buttresses, two lancet belfry openings, and a broach spire. Inside, the aisle has been partitioned off to create a chapel. The nave arcade has chamfered arches on circular columns with moulded bases and capitals, and there are arch-braced roof trusses. A polygonal stone font and stained glass are also present.
