Description
Woodend Mill is an integrated cotton mill built between 1830 and 1840, constructed in several phases. It features a cast-iron and brick internal structure, with exterior walls made of coursed and squared rubble, topped with slate roofs.
The earliest part of the mill is likely the eastern range, which stands five storeys tall and measures 13 by 4 bays (or 26 by 4 windows), with a single gable roof. The wood mullioned and transomed windows have been renewed and feature flat arched stone lintels. There are privy towers projecting from the south elevation, and a stair tower that has been partly rebuilt against the north elevation. The wider western range is four storeys high, with 8 by 5 bays (or 16 by 10 windows) and a multi-ridge hipped roof. This section also has wood mullioned and transomed windows with flat arched stone lintels, and there are taking-in doors, possibly inserted, towards the centre of the north elevation. A water tower has been added over the northeast bay of the roof, and there are possible privy towers projecting to the south, along with a later service tower added to the northeast. The two main buildings are connected by a higher block built in a separate phase, which includes a passageway that crosses the building. A chimney is located at the rear of the western range, but there is no visible engine house.
Adjacent to the eastern range is the earliest block of weaving sheds, which is detached. It has coursed and squared rubble curtain walls, is single storey, and features a four-bay layout with a saw-tooth roof. The later phases of the weaving shed development have been substantially altered and are not considered of special interest.
Woodend Mill is a nearly complete example of a first-generation integrated cotton mill site, where both weaving and spinning capacities were planned from the outset.
