Description
The Preesall War Memorial is situated on The Mount, also known as Hakon’s Mound, which is believed to be an ancient earthwork, possibly a mill-mound or garden feature. This location is on the west side of Lancaster Road, at the junction with Pilling Lane. The memorial features a tall cross on a tapering plinth, which stands on a two-stepped base.
Bronze plaques attached to the plinth display inscriptions. The main dedicatory inscription on the front reads: "THIS CROSS IS ERECTED/ IN HONOUR AND REMEMBRANCE/ OF THE MEN OF PREESALL/ WHO FELL IN THE WARS/ 1914-1918 AND 1939-1945." Names of those commemorated are listed on the other three sides.
Access to the memorial is from the east via a path and a flight of stone steps, which are lined with new handrails added in 2014; however, these handrails are not considered of special interest.
