Church of St Oswald

The Church of St. Oswald, built in 1896 by architects Austin and Paley, is a Grade II listed building located on Lancaster Road in Preesall with Hackensall. It is constructed of red brick with sandstone dressings and features a green slate roof. The church consists of a nave and chancel under a continuous roof, along with a south aisle, south porch, and transepts.

The south aisle has four bays, with paired central windows that are made up of two lights, each featuring a quatrefoil under a pointed head with a hood. The buttressed south transept has a similar window, but with cusped heads on the lights. The gabled porch includes a door with a moulded round arch. The west window consists of three cusped ogee lights. The north nave wall has three bays, with windows that have flat heads and cusped lights. The east window features a pointed head, four cusped ogee lights, and tracery with curvilinear motifs. At the west end of the nave roof, there is a bellcote clad in shingles, which has a square plan that tapers to a short spire.

Inside, the walls are made of exposed brickwork with sandstone dressings, while the chancel walls are entirely clad in sandstone. The south aisle, which has four bays, features octagonal piers with concave sides. The nave roof trusses include tie beams and braced king posts, with a ceiling that follows the curve of arch braces to create a barrel roof, all adorned with stendil decoration. The south transept contains a chapel, while the north transept serves as an organ chamber. The chancel screen, which has Perpendicular tracery, incorporates a pulpit at its northern end. The chancel is equipped with a piscina and double sedilia. Inside the church, there is a plan and perspective view by Austin and Paley, dated 1896, which shows the proposed design of the church, including a west tower that was never built.
