Description
Fielden Library, built in 1863, is a two-storey red brick building with ashlar dressings and a pitched modern tile roof. It features an ashlar parapet and a vermiculated ashlar plinth. The ground floor has two groups of three lancet windows with sashes, while the first floor showcases five paired round-headed lancets with sashes, separated by colonnettes with elaborate foliate capitals. These are topped by two-centred super-arches with oculi in the tympana and hoodmoulds. The entrance has panelled doors set under a trefoiled archway, which includes an oculus in the tympanum surrounded by intricately carved foliage and the inscription "Public Hall Library and Reading Room." Additionally, there is a continuous ground floor hoodmould that breaks over mandorla-shaped panels on either side of the door, featuring the "AD" monogram and the year "1863."
