Description

Higher Fairsnape Farmhouse is a house built in 1637, with likely alterations from the 17th century. It is constructed of sandstone rubble, pebbledashed at the front, and features a slate roof. The building has two storeys and an attic, with one bay on each side of the porch.

On the right side, there is a six-light mullioned window with a hollow chamfer, outer chamfer, and a hood. Above this, on the first floor, is a two-light window with rendered reveals and a flat-faced mullion. The left side contains a three-light window with chamfered mullions and a plain stone lintel. Above it, there is a two-light rebated and chamfered mullioned window with a lowered sill. The porch has a catslide roof that follows the pitch of the main roof. The door features a rendered chamfered surround with a hood and above it is a carved stone coat of arms inscribed with 'RP [Robert Parkinson] 1637'.

The inner door is missing but has a chamfered surround with a triangular head and a wooden draw bar set into the wall. This door leads into a lobby created by a firehood baffle. The right-hand room retains a chamfered and stopped bressumer. The rear wall has a blocked two-light mullioned fire window, now obscured by later extensions. The ceiling includes a large chamfered axial beam and exposed common joists. The left-hand room features a moulded shouldered fireplace with a segmental head within an earlier hearth, which has a heck covered by wallpaper and a renewed bressumer. The attic above the left side of the house contains a roof truss with a collar and raking queen struts, while the attic over the right side may be older.
