Description
Poolfoot Cottage is a pair of cottages, likely from the 18th century or earlier, that have been converted into a bungalow. The building features cobble walls that are rendered and whitewashed, and it was originally thatched but is now covered with a slate roof. It consists of five single-cell bays and has two axial chimney stacks. The cottage is a single storey.
A modern entrance porch is located at the second bay, while the fourth bay has French windows. The third bay contains a rectangular window with glazing bars and 12 panes, and there is another window in the fifth bay with a small two-light sliding sash window beyond it. The second and fourth bays have large inserted rectangular bay windows. The eaves are deep and boxed with boards.
Inside, the original roof structure is exposed in the third bay and can be seen in the loft over the fourth bay. It features raised trusses supported on cross walls, halved at the ridge, with purlins made of large scantling that are roughly hewn. The common rafters extend from the ridge to the purlin and from the purlin to the outer walls. It is said that thatch remains in situ over the second and third bays.
