Description
Greenside, The Rest, and Ivy Cottage are a group of four dwellings built in 1901 by Sir Edwin Lutyens. They are constructed of brick, rendered and whitewashed, topped with red tiled hipped and swept roofs, showcasing a free version of the Arts and Crafts domestic style. The buildings are arranged in a quadrangle, with two storeys and joined at their rear corners. A central courtyard is accessible through arches in the north and south ranges, and the four dwellings are cleverly designed with their front doors located in the re-entrants. The windows are all casements with leaded lights, positioned close to the ground on the ground floor and near the eaves on the first floor. The front door and re-entrant to Greenside, located at the south-west corner, is now covered by a large conservatory.
These buildings were originally part of a larger development plan for the Rossall Beach Estate, which Lutyens sketched between 1901 and 1902. Although few elements of the original scheme were executed, they were modified and completed by T.G. Lumb.
