Description
The east range of the quadrangle at Rossall School was built in 1867 and designed by architect E G Paley. The design continues from the north range to the gatehouse, featuring slight variations in the tracery. It includes a door that is planked and fitted with ornamental cast iron hinges, set in a chamfered two-centred arch, and is adorned with a gabled stone porch supported by polished granite columns with Romanesque capitals. The east elevation showcases an Italianate style with round-arched sashes that have marginal glazing bars and moulded imposts.
The gatehouse is three storeys high, featuring octagonal turrets with ogee roofs, cross-shaped finials, and a crenellated parapet. It has four-centred arches and a two-storey canted oriel window above, with cusped sashes. The turrets contain two storeys of round-arched windows and one storey of pointed cusped lancets, along with bands of diamond panels, one of which has inscribed quatrefoils.
There are various characteristic Arts-and-Crafts details, such as notice boards under the tower arch supported by quadrant-shaped brackets leading to a deep entablature. Inside, the chimneypiece in Marshall's lodge features relief sculpture of a tree within a typical Arts-and-Crafts surround. The remainder of the east range has mullion-and-transom windows, with those on the first floor featuring depressed arched lights. The doorways also have depressed arched heads and two-light fanlights.
