- Architect E G Paley. From the north range as far south as the gatehouse, the design of the north range is continued, though with a slight variation of the tracery. 1 door (planked with ornamental cast iron hinges) in chamfered 2-centred arch, with gabled stone porch on polished granite columns with Romanesque capitals. But the east elevation has Italianate treatment: round-arched sashes with marginal glazing bars and moulded imposts. Gatehouse is 3-storeyed, octagonal turrets ogee-roofed, with cross-shaped finials, and crenellated parapet. 4-centred arches, 2-storey canted oriel above, with cusped sashes. Turrets have 2 storeys of round-arched windows, 1 of pointed cusped lancets: bands of diamond panels, 1 with inscribed quatrefoils. Various characteristic Arts-and-Crafts details: eg notice boards under tower arch, with quadrant-shaped brackets to deep entablature. And chimneypiece in Marshall's lodge, with relief sculpture of a tree in typical Arts-and-Crafts surround. Remainder of east range has mullion-and-transom crosses, those on 1st floor with depressed arched lights. Doorways with depressed arched heads and 2-light fanlights.
