Description

A group of four dwellings, York Cottage, Red Cottage, Mitre Cottage, and Delph Cottage, was built in 1901 by Sir Edwin Lutyens. The houses are constructed of brick, rendered and whitewashed, with red tiled hipped and swept roofs. They are designed in a free Arts and Crafts domestic style. The buildings are arranged in four ranges, joined at the rear to form a quadrangle, with a central courtyard accessible via arches in the north and south ranges. The front doors are set in re-entrants. The windows are casements with leaded lights; ground-floor windows are close to the ground, while first-floor windows are set close to the eaves.

The cottages were originally planned as part of a larger scheme for the Rossall Beach Estate, sketched by Lutyens in 1901-02. Only a few elements of the original scheme were executed, although subsequent adjustments were made by T.G. Lumb. Architectural drawings held by the Royal Institute of British Architects show plans, sections, and elevations for a group of ten cottages, including the end groups of four that match the listed buildings.
