Description
The Thornton Cleveleys War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1923 by sculptor Albert Toft and mason Mr W L Cookson, with additions for the Second World War.
The memorial features a life-sized bronze figure of an infantryman, who has his bare head bowed in respect and rests his hands on the butt of his reversed Lee-Enfield rifle, with the muzzle on his left foot. Behind the figure, there is a Brodie steel helmet and a 1917 issue 'small box' respirator spilling out of its case. The bronze figure is mounted on a square granite shaft that stands on a tapered plinth with a bull-nosed cornice moulding, raised on a two-stepped base. The front panel of the shaft has a dedication in lead lettering that reads: TO OUR / GLORIOUS / DEAD / 1914-1918, while the names of 84 fallen soldiers from the First World War are inscribed on the other panels.
The memorial is approached from the rear via a path made of Yorkstone paving slabs, which also surrounds the base. Additionally, the 113 fallen soldiers from the Second World War are commemorated on three granite tablets shaped like open books, located at the front and sides of the memorial within the circular lawn, with their names also in lead lettering.
