Description

The Forge is a mid-19th century estate sawmill and joiner’s shop, built on the site of an earlier forge and now used for storage. It is constructed of sandstone rubble with a slate roof. The building follows the line of the slope, being single-storey at the east side, facing the road, and two-storey at the rear. The windows have plain reveals and projecting sills. The east wall has three bays with modern windows featuring glazing bars; a door is located between the second and third bays, and a chimney is present on the right-hand gable. To the right of the main building is a lower wheel house. The west wall is longer, with four bays. The left-hand window on the lower storey is blocked, and the second bay contains a doorway. The wheel house to the left also has a blocked doorway. Inside, a 21-foot high breast wheel with an iron hub and rim remains.
