Description
The Church of St Peter, built in 1848 by J.E. Gregan, features a chancel and tower added in 1925 by Austin and Paley. The original structure is made of squared rock-faced limestone with sandstone dressings and a slate roof, while the additions are primarily in sandstone. The church consists of a nave, a lower chancel, a south porch, and a north transept with a tower to the west.
The west wall has two bays, buttresses with offsets, and lancet windows with angle shafts. Above, there is a wheel window with shafts resembling spokes and a bellcote that has a trefoiled opening and a cross finial. The south-western buttress contains a flue that ends in a louvre with gablets and lancet openings. The south nave wall features four bays to the east of the porch with chamfered lancets separated by buttresses, and to the west of the porch is a double lancet window. The north side has five nave bays.
The tower is three stages high with diagonal buttresses and a broached spire. The bell openings consist of two trefoiled lights under a pointed head with a trefoil. The spire has gablets on all four sides with lancet openings. The three south chancel windows are similar to the bell openings, while the east window has three stepped lancets with angle shafts.
Inside, the nave has five roof trusses supported by corbels, featuring arch-braced collars and short king posts. The chancel has a barrel roof with one king-post truss and a raised tie beam. The chancel arch is chamfered in two orders, with moulded imposts and semi-octagonal responds. The east window includes moulded pointed inner arches and attached shafts.
