Description

The farmhouse probably dates to around 1700. It is built of rendered clay and brick, with a corrugated iron roof that replaced the original thatch. The house has a cross-wing plan and is one and a half storeys high. The windows are modern and have timber frames that project slightly. The main range on the north-east side has one bay, with a dormer window in the roof. A 20th-century addition is set back against the front of the main range to the left, and a single-storey porch is attached to the right. The cross-wing has a stair window on its left side, a ground-floor window on its right, and a window to the upper storey within the gable. Chimneys are located to the left of the windows on the main range and in the centre of the cross-wing's ridge. The north-west wall of the cross-wing has two ground-floor windows facing the road. The south-west wall has one bay, with an upper window set within the gable and a narrow window to the right on the ground floor. The main range has two ground-floor windows, the left one beneath a modern verandah. The right-hand return wall of the cross-wing is said to have a doorway. According to a plan in R.C. Watson’s "Parlours with External Entrances," published in Vernacular Architecture Vol. 6, 1975, p. 30, the house’s plan is as described. The current owner believes the cross-wing to be a later addition, built of brick, and that framing for the original doorway was found above the right-hand window of the south-west wall, differing from the plan published by Watson.
