Description
No. 58 Moor Street is a handloom weaving workshop, now used as dental surgeries, dating from around 1800. The building has been altered, and its rear wall was entirely rebuilt in the 20th century. It is constructed of red brick in English garden wall bond (5+1) and features a composition tile roof. The structure has a rectangular plan and is a low, two-storey range with nine windows.
On the ground floor, there is an altered window and doorway at the left end, followed by six segmental-headed windows with altered glazing; the first two windows are larger than the others. The first floor has nine two-light horizontal-sliding sash windows, each with 15 small panes in each leaf. There are no chimneys present.
Historically, in 1808, the building was occupied by Ainsworth & Co, which housed 181 cast-iron looms and 77 wooden looms. This makes it a very unusual survival of an industrial building that represents the transition between domestic and factory-based production.
