Description
This sundial, located approximately 5 metres south of the west end of the Church of St Mary the Virgin, is the base of a former medieval preaching cross. Made of stone, it is a broad square block with a weathered and worn top, which may have been used for sharpening tools or weapons. The sides of the block feature inscribed lettering indicating that it is a preaching cross dated to 1000 AD. This piece was removed from the village green in 1818. It was later used as a base for a sundial mounted on a dressed stone column, which has since been removed or stolen around the year 2000.
