Description
White Bridge is a public road bridge that spans the new cut of the River Douglas. It was probably built in the early to mid-18th century and is constructed from squared sandstone. The bridge features three spans with segmental arches, which are adorned with rusticated voussoirs, keystones, and arch-bands. It has rounded cutwaters made of rock-faced stone that have concave chamfered tops, which transition into pilasters. The bridge also includes a plain cornice, parapet, and rounded coping, although the coping may have been replaced. The Douglas Navigation was constructed between 1720 and 1742, and this bridge closely resembles the Great Hanging Bridge in Croston. Additionally, it crosses the boundary with Rufford in the West Lancashire District.
