Description
Bridge Number 40 is an accommodation bridge over the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, likely built in the early 1770s. It is constructed of coursed sandstone and features a single elliptical arch. There is a band below the parapet with coping. The section of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal between Newburgh and Gathurst follows the line of Leigh's Cut, which was started by the Douglas Navigation around 1753. Work on the canal was ongoing in 1772, and it was opened for traffic between Gathurst and Liverpool in 1774.
