Description

The building is a barn with an integral shippon, attached cart shed, and stable range, located approximately 20 metres north-west of Knowles Farmhouse. The barn likely dates from the late 18th century or early 19th century, featuring a datestone from 1688 on its east gable. The cart shed and stable range are probably from the 19th century, and both sections have undergone alterations. The barn is constructed from coursed sandstone rubble, while the other range is made of coursed squared sandstone, with both having asbestos sheet roofs.

The barn is arranged in an L-plan, consisting of five structural bays oriented on an east-west axis, with the cart shed attached to the west end of the south side. It has opposed wagon doorways in the third bay; the rear doorway is segmental-headed with a damaged keystone, while the front doorway features a cast-iron lintel that replaces the original arch. To the right of the front doorway, there is a re-used, blocked 2-light mullioned window, a large square-headed doorway with monolith jambs and a lintel (also blocked), and a square-headed doorway with a wooden doorcase at the right end. The east gable wall, which has been rebuilt, includes an inserted garage doorway at ground floor level and the datestone with raised lettering "1688" above it. The rear of the barn has a buttress to the shippon and rebuilt masonry to the east of this.

The cart shed features two square-headed cart entries with punch-dressed lintels, along with a similar but lower doorway to the left, which has a square loading door above. The stable extends to the left and includes three square-headed doorways, with the third doorway situated beneath a flight of external steps leading to loft doorways for both parts, and a loft window in the centre. This building forms a group with Knowles Farmhouse located approximately 20 metres to the south-east.
