Description

Ayrefield Farmhouse, appearing on older maps as Bank House, dates to the early 19th century, although it may incorporate earlier elements. Constructed of coursed, graduated sandstone rubble with a composition tile roof, it has an unusual double-depth rectangular plan with the main entrance in a gable end. The symmetrical south-west facade, featuring three windows, has a first-floor sill band. The central doorway is distinguished by pilaster jambs, a wedge lintel, and a panelled and glazed door topped with a three-pane overlight. The windows on both floors have monolith jambs, wedge lintels, and altered glazing. A chimney rises from the centre of the ridge. The right-hand (south) side has only a doorway near the rear corner and two altered or inserted windows above. The rear gable wall displays a large, five-light flat-faced mullioned window on each floor, with the first-floor window missing two mullions and its fifth light blocked. Above this window, masonry patching suggests a blocked doorway. A 20th-century lean-to addition extends from the right side at ground floor level, and a larger lean-to extends across the north side.
