Description

A row of eight small cottages, now forming six dwellings, is located in Up Holland. These cottages, known as Tan Pit Cottages, likely date from the early to mid-18th century, and appear to have been constructed in multiple phases. The cottages are built of coursed squared sandstone, with a roof of composition tiles. They have a double-depth plan, with each cottage originally single-fronted, though numbers 67 and 69, and 71 and 73 are now integrated into single dwellings. Each cottage has two low floors and a single window front. Plain doorways are situated on the left side, with porches added later to numbers 59, 63, 65, 67, and 73. Most windows are 3-light casements on both floors, although numbers 63 and 67 have 2-light windows. All windows feature flush sills and lintels with mostly altered glazing. Individual ridge chimneys are present. Recent single-bay additions have been built at each end of the row, matching the original style. Inside number 67/69 are two large, hand-shaped and pegged kingpost roof trusses, supported by angle struts. The interiors of the other cottages were not inspected. These cottages have group value.
