Description

Heald House is a house dated 1706, which was altered in the 19th century. It is built of brick on a stone plinth, rendered except for the rear wall, and has a roof made of blue tiles. The building has a rectangular double pile plan, is two storeys high with an attic, and features three symmetrical bays. The plinth has bands at the first and second floors. The entrance door has pilastered stone jambs and a plain glazed semicircular fanlight, with an arched wooden porch added around 1920. Above the door is a datestone with floral decoration and relief lettering that reads: S A M 1706.

On the ground floor, there are two windows, and on the first floor, there are three, all of which are sashed and have 19th-century surrounds that are eared and minimally pedimented. The attic features three gabled dormers with sashed windows. There is a 19th-century canted bay on the left return wall. Inside, there is a dog-leg staircase with half-landings, which is of late 17th-century type, featuring oblong columnar newels with pendents, a broad string, turned balusters, and a broad moulded handrail. This staircase is located in a rear extension, with the outer walls dating from the 19th century. Additionally, there is a section of carved and panelled wainscot in the hall passage, which is said to have been taken from Nelson's "Foudroyant," although it is 17th-century in style. The doors throughout the house have fielded panels.
