Description

Atherton Hall is a farmhouse, likely dating from the early 17th century, that has been converted into a house. It features a stone plinth, brick construction, and part timber framing, topped with a slate roof. The building has no chimney stack and is two storeys high. Its T-shaped plan results from two building phases, with the present crosswing on the right, which includes significant timber framing, likely being older than the main range. The main range has a two-bay baffle-entry plan, with a central door that has a large stone lintel inscribed with "IA 1635," now enclosed by a recent single-storey gabled porch. There are two 3-light casements on each floor. The gable of the projecting wing reveals exposed timber framing and features two 3-light casements.

Inside, the wing has two bays but is said to have originally been only one at the front end. It contains key elements of a timber cross wall, including wall posts set on plinths of two sandstone blocks, a tie beam with knee braces, one of two original intermediate posts, a high rail, and a doorway topped with a grill of short staves. There are two bridging beams with quarter-round moulding, along with two others that are adzed oak copies of the originals. The building originally had a very large chimney stack with back-to-back fireplaces; however, only the one in the left bay remains, featuring a large bressummer and a bread oven found in the chimney breast. The chimney stack was discovered to have a cavity filled with oat grains. Most roof trusses are concealed, but in the wing, the lower ends of windbraces and the tops of wall framing with braces are visible.
