Description

Wade Hall Farmhouse is a farmhouse, now a house, dating from the early 17th century or earlier, with alterations likely made in the 19th century. It features a stone plinth and a timber frame with rendered brick cladding, topped by a slate roof that has two levels. The building has a baffle-entry three-bay plan with a ridge chimney stack and two gable end stacks. It stands two storeys tall, with the third bay stepped down. The entrance door, which has a rectangular stone head, is located on the right side of the middle bay. The ground floor includes three casement windows, each with three lights, stone sills, and stone heads. The first floor has three similar windows with stone sills, with those on the left being headed by a timber wallplate rendered as a continuous band. At the rear, there is an outshut and a single-storey extension.

Inside, there is substantial evidence of the timber frame, including wall posts and partition walls made of posts and rails with braces, likely featuring clamstaff and daub infill. The roof has a king post truss, with the tie beam visible in the chamber below, two pairs of side purlins, and evidence of four wind braces. The ground floor contains large chamfered bridging beams in two rooms; one in the left room has an unusual diamond-shaped and grooved stop, along with undercutting that indicates a former stair, presumably added after the original construction.
