Description

Nos. 4 to 14 Coal Hey is a block of six back-to-back houses, likely linked to the domestic textile industry, built in the late 18th century. The houses are constructed from watershot coursed sandstone and feature a slate roof with one ridge chimney and chimney stacks at both gables, along with stone gable copings on the front. The layout is a double depth, three-bay plan, with three storeys. Nos. 4, 6, and 8 face south, while Nos. 10, 12, and 14 face the back.

Nos. 4 and 6 have doorways positioned side-by-side, with plain surrounds and slab canopies supported by shaped brackets. Each of these houses has one window on the two lower floors and two windows above, all of which are horizontal rectangular in shape with altered glazing; some windows are damaged and others are blocked as of 1984. At the rear, Nos. 10, 12, and 14 feature plain doorways and altered ground floor windows, with three-light flush mullion windows on the upper floors—one at the first floor and two at the second floor.

The east gable wall of No. 10 has a blocked taking-in doorway at the second floor, and the wall below shows the outline of former external steps. In front of Nos. 10 to 14, there is a single-storey range with a monopitched roof that contains a row of five privies, which are not included in the listing. This block is noted as a rare example of its type.
