Description

The Former Church of St John, built in 1890 by architects Austin and Paley, is now a warehouse. It is constructed of snecked sandstone with a slate roof and is oriented on a north-south axis. The building features a nave with low aisles, double transepts, and the base of an intended south-west tower, all designed in the Arts and Crafts Perpendicular style.

The gable facing the road is buttressed and has a set-back upper wall with a large four-light traceried window set within a recessed panel. On the east side, the first bay includes a gabled porch with a moulded arched doorway. The front wall of the porch extends sideways to create buttresses, and there is a circular side-wall window with flamboyant tracery. The aisles contain flat-headed two-light windows, while the nave has four large segmental-headed four-light windows with Perpendicular tracery. The twin-gabled transepts each feature a tall two-light window in the gable.

At the south-west corner, the base of the tower has diagonal buttresses, a moulded arched doorway, a band of blind arcading above it, and a pyramidal roof. The interior is mostly obscured by current contents but appears largely unaltered, except for damage to the high chancel arch caused by the removal of the Rood, which is now located in the Church of St. Nicholas on Church Street in Newchurch.
