Description

Ilex Mill is a cotton mill built in 1856 for Peter Whitehead, who may have been its designer. It is constructed of roughly-faced, squared sandstone. The mill is mainly five storeys high, with uniform 9-pane vertical windows. Its layout is not symmetrical, with three and two-storey wings featuring slender, coupled pilaster strips at the corners and elsewhere, linking to the main block. The roofs are mostly flat, with a simple cornice running along the top. A very tall chimney rises from a pedestal with quoins and cornices, and has bands and a cornice at the top. Inside, cast-iron columns support arched brick ceilings.
