Description

Nos. 1, 3, and 5 Whitewall Wood is a house dating from 1748, as indicated on the lintel, which has been altered from two cottages into one dwelling, with an attached cottage (No. 5) built around 1800. The building is constructed from coursed sandstone blocks with quoins and features a stone slate roof with brick chimney stacks at the gables.

The main house has a single-depth, two-bay plan with a rear outshut and stands two storeys tall. It has a continuous chamfered dripcourse, and the original doorway is offset to the right of centre, featuring a board door with a chamfered surround and a lintel inscribed with "L J : M 1748." The ground floor originally had double-chamfered mullion windows with two lights to the left and three lights to the right, but the second window has been altered into a door, and the others have been replaced with top-hung casements. The first floor has similar three-light windows, which have also been altered.

At the rear, the single-storey outshut has a door in the chamfered side wall, with the first bay featuring a two-light window that lacks a mullion, and the second bay has a first-floor window with a chamfered mullion. The rear of the outshut shows remains of similar windows. Inside, there are some large chamfered beams in the outshut, while the other beams, fireplaces, and doors are consistent with the building's date.

No. 5, attached to the right and at a lower level, is built with watershot coursing and consists of one bay and two lower storeys. It has a doorway to the right and one vertical rectangular window on each floor, both featuring 19th-century-style sills and heads. This cottage is included in the listing as part of the group.
