Description

The Tentering Tower is a derelict cloth store located on Stubbins Vale Road, originally built in 1866 for Porritt's Stubbins Vale Mill and raised around 1880. Constructed from coursed rock-faced sandstone, except for the west wall which is made of coursed rubble, the building has a square plan and no roof. It was designed as an eye-catcher and was originally a single-storey structure, now appearing as two storeys with three symmetrical windows. The north, east, and south sides feature simple oversailing battlements.

The architectural front faces east and has three unglazed vertical-rectangular windows on each floor. Each side of the building has one similar window on each floor. The entrance front to the west includes a large round-headed doorway at the center of the ground floor and a loading doorway above, accessed by stone steps that are mostly fallen, located to the right. This entrance is flanked by windows similar to those at the front, although the right-hand ground floor window is now blocked. The interior is currently a void. Historically, the tower was used to store cloths before and after they were stretched on tenter frames, and it appears in a photograph from around 1870 as a single-storey building with cloths on long tenter frames in the field behind it.
