Description
The Grant Arms Hotel, built around 1828, features a symmetrical classical front made of painted ashlar. It stands three storeys tall and has four sash windows with top opening lights. The entrance is framed by Tuscan half-columns, and there is a clock on the top storey. The building includes sill bands and quoins, topped with a slate roof. At the back, there is an older wing, possibly from the 18th century, which is rendered and also has a slate roof, along with an arched doorway with imposts. The Grant brothers, who established the hotel in 1828, are said to have inspired the characters of the Cherybles in Charles Dickens' "Nicholas Nickleby."
