Description
The Ramsbottom War Memorial, built in 1950, commemorates those who served in the First and Second World Wars. It is made of Portland stone and stands on a podium of Yorkstone paving slabs.
The memorial features a Latin cross with an octagonal shaft and cross-arms, topped with conical caps. The front (south) side of the cross displays a black-painted metal sword in its scabbard. The shaft flares out at the bottom to form a square base, which is elevated on a pedestal with chamfered corners, resting on a square plinth. This is situated on a slightly raised base within a circular podium that has a segmental stone curb.
The inscription on the south side is painted black and reads: "URBAN DISTRICT / OF / RAMSBOTTOM // TO THE MEMORY OF / THOSE WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES / IN THE TWO WORLD WARS / 1914 - 1918 / 1939 - 1945 // TO THE HONOURED MEMORY / OF THOSE WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES / FOR THEIR COUNTRY." The rear and side elevations are plain. It is said that a roll of honour is buried in a casket beneath the memorial.
